Who we are
A number of years ago a small group of people, led by Joy Gadsby, researched the history of Sanderstead resulting in the publication of the "Village History of Sanderstead" by the Bourne Society in 1998. This small group , having finished their research, decided to continue meeting as a local history group under the leadership of Joy until her death in 2018.
Joyce Hoad, Lizzie Mould and Phil Swallow are the current leaders, the group has grown and we regularly host up to 40 people, sometimes more.
All are welcome to listen to our illustrated monthly talks, held at All Saints Church Hall, Onslow Gardens, Sanderstead on the last Wednesday of each month (except August and December).
There is no membership or annual fee, just a charge of £2 for each talk to cover the cost of hall hire, website and refreshments. You can visit as often as you wish.
We don't have professional speakers as our ethos is to remain informal and encourage any member to offer a talk of their own choice. We are not limited to the history of Sanderstead and a talk can be on any historical subject. Experience isn't necessary in either speaking or technology. Having talks illustrated makes them more interesting and if you have images we can help you put them into a PowerPoint presentation. We have a digital projector and access to a large screen.
We are affiliated to the Bourne Society where details of our meetings are shown on their website and printed in the Local History Records.
